Lord Feldman’s recent statement, written for the Belfast Telegraph, is to be welcomed. It makes clear the Conservative Party’s intention to do what it should have done decades ago – namely to seek a mandate to govern, and to organise, in every part of the UK. The statement is especially welcome as it includes sections that I wrote myself, on behalf of the Party, several years ago – before the ill-fated UCUNF debacle.
I wish the new Northern Irish Conservatives every success. At last we may start to see the normalisation of our politics.

Any thoughts on a name Jeff?
Will this signal the return of Jeff Peel into Conservative NI politics? I for some reason don’t feel any sort of optimism or change given this recent statement.
A name… Nicon? That would be quite snappy. Geddit?
I welcome any normalisation of our politics and wish the Conservatives many second places to UKIP.
How exactly does this new party differ from the pre-UCUNF Conservatives?
I’m not really the one to ask. I suppose it will have more autonomy from CCHQ. It will have a different name and may well appeal to a wider voter base as a result of that. But I, for one, don’t know what the proposed name is. Nor is it clear to me how it will be differently governed compared to Conservatives NI. But the important thing is that it won’t have UUP baggage attached. That’s the most important thing.
