Devolution of fiscal powers would have to be top of the list – a Stormont that only has spending powers will always implement statist solutions.

The UK should learn from the dynamism of the US federated model – see in particular Texas (zero state income tax and the most jobs added throughout the economic crisis).

As daughter #2 is facing the rigours of Grammar application this year, even tho’ daughter #1 is already in Friends, am rightly concerned about the weight of applications they are likely to receive this year!!

#1 caught the hockey bug and is dancing in the Assembly hall!

Joel frankly I wouldn’t know whether it was/is good or not. More of a hockey school I’d presume. Produced Olympic gold medalists in my era like Jimmy Kirkwood.

Ralph, thanks for your kind comments. We both live in hope that one day the Conservatives, Labour Party and LibDems might organise and contest elections in Northern Ireland. Only the normalisation and secularisation of our politics will make this a normal society and help dilute the scourge of sectarianism.

Excellent article, Jeff. The labour Party should organise and campaign in Northern Ireland but has consistently resisted that development. When I was a Labour parliamentary candidate I argued within the Party that Labour should have a presence in the Province but there was absolutely no interest. As you say, this leaves their policy towards the Union in doubt and does nothing to help normalise party politics here. Perhaps the decision by the Conservatives to organise in Northern Ireland might prompt further thought by Labour Party managers.
